Jul 24, 2012 - Perhaps the most notable Pittsburgh athlete in the 2012 London Olympics will be swimmer Allison Schmitt after she competes in four events for Team USA. But after the excitement from the pool dies down, all eyes will be on the track and field where the spotlight will undoubtedly settle. There, two athletes with Pittsburgh ties will compete on the track for the United States.
Trevor Barron, a Pittsburgh-native, will be the youngest athlete to compete in track and field for the United States at 19-years old in the 20 kilometer race walk. The final, scheduled for August 4, will feature Barron as a favorite after breaking the American record in the event during the trials, finishing in one hour, 23 minutes.
The London Olympics will be the third games for sprinter Lauryn Williams of Rochester, PA. Williams won silver in the 100m in 2004, but a debacle that included a dropped baton during the 2008 Olympics cost her a second chance at the podium. She is hopeful for another chance at a medal as a member of the Team USA relay pool.
